Manlleu, capital of the Ter region, lies in the centre of the Osona area in Barcelona province, and the most outstanding feature of its landscape is the river Ter, accessible from Axis Vic - Olot (C-37) and the Transversal Axis Girona - Lleida (C-17). Manlleu has archaeological remains dating back to Neolithic times, but the town was not founded until the middle ages, when it grew up around the church of Santa Maria, expanding beyond its mediaeval walls in modern times. In the 19th century the river was used as a source of power and for the Industrial Canal. Industrial development led to rapid growth in the population, but in the early 20th century came the crisis of the textile industry. The great flood of 1940, coming immediately after the Spanish civil war, made things even worse, but also encouraged new projects which have made Manlleu today a modern town with rich cultural diversity. | ||
